I really enjoyed this book. It was a unique and exciting read that really keeps you entertained. The only flaw I found with it was the heroine. Haley has got to be THEE worst lead character ever. She is such a self-righteous, stuck-up, selfish b*tch. After disappearing for a year, she suddenly returns to her home and expects everything to go back to normal. She doesn't care that her family and friends thought she was dead, nor does she care that they're worried about her and her strange behavior. Whether they're her friends and family show how worried they are and try to help, she pretty much tells them to @#$% off every time. The girl literally cares for no one and nothing for herself. She expects everything to be handed to her with no explanation or gratitude, and shows nothing but cold indifference or discord. In her defense, her father's insistence that she must be on drugs gets annoying, but honestly, what is he supposed to think? As a mermaid, she's just as selfish, and even more stuck up. She feels that the entire ocean is hers to command and that she has the right to force her will on everything and control them for her amusement, even using her mind control on another mermaid who doesn't want to play with her. She also completely ok with disappearing from her parents' and friends' lives without a care. It's like she has the inability to feel anything for anyone, and that she's entitled to everything she wants without thought or question.
And poor Bill, the guy that's hopelessly in love with her for some reason I can't fathom. He practically worships the ground she walk on, yet not only does she not give him the time of day, she treats him like garbage. When they're stranded together, she lets him do all the work, but is perfectly content to reap the benefits of it, and doesn't lift a finger to help him in anything, even his attempt to get them rescued. The only way she's shown that she cares for him is to be concerned that he might die at sea and wants to rescue him; that's it. Even when he asks her to marry him at the end, she needs to be talked into it and only seems to accept in a "why not?" kind of way, but pretty much assures him that they won't be seeing each other much and things need to be done her way and on her terms, not caring about him and his feelings for opinion at all. She also just begins to come and go on land as she pleases, pretty much telling her parents and friends to go to hell and leave her alone without caring how they feel when she does come back. She has literally got to be the worst heroine I've ever read about.
One more thing, if I have to read the words "the sea called to her" one more time, I think I'll have to claw my eyes out. But other than that repeating phrase and the world's worst heroine, I really enjoyed this book.

Using the backdrop of every girl's fantasy to be able to run away to the sea where life is amazing and adventurous, this tale weaves a tangled web of what an ordinary girl would go through when faced with the irresistible choice of living the life under the sea but still pining for both worlds. Happiest when she can finally reconcile the two, the journey is about how she does, who she becomes, and how she can affect change greater than what she ever thought possible.
Mermaids are a concept that I feel is still begging to be explored. When they are done, it's generally in a folkloric sense or a strange little romantic tale that attempts to be a Disney-true "The Little Mermaid" copycat. However, that's not what this book is. The author manages to add her own spin on the allegorical creature and rather than having the focus on the physical transformation, the focus is instead on character growth. Although there were some areas that slowed a bit for me, as a reader, I would say as a whole this was a nice, pleasant read that is perfect for the YA crowd. Very original!
I’ve never read a mermaid book, and after reading this book I realise that I need to read more. Marinian Pearls shows off the ocean and all its diversity, and I fell in love with it. The sequences where we explore under the sea were magical, from the bright, sunny surface down to the very depths of the ocean floor.
I don’t know if it was the intent of the author, but I could easily describe this book as a modern reimaging of “The Little Mermaid”. The specifics of the story are completely different (such as Haley’s motivations, the nature of mermaids, and, of course, the romance is turned on its head), but I couldn’t help but feel the story was inspired from the old fairy tale. Which is a good thing, of course – I love fairy tale retellings!
There were moments where some sections dragged a bit, but they weren’t enough to detract from the freedom that both the reader and the main character experienced as a mermaid.
Recommended for fans of fairy tale retellings, paranormal romance, and the sea.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
