Couldn’t really get into it – which I’ll admit is partially because I just finished reading SK’s Mr. Mercedes and to come from a well-written book with words and phrases that can evoke a scene or an emotion to a mediocre writing style like this one does make it hard to get into. But, mostly could not get into it because the writing is plodding. Main character is a former Marine who is referred to as “the Marine”, “jarhead”, “the on edge Marine”, “the alert Marine” (seconds before his “eyes fogged over as he was lost in thought” – so actually not so alert) so, so many times in the first few chapters that you feel like yelling, “I get it, he’s a MARINE.” Also, I don’t think he’s a very good Marine – he shoots an AK-47 through his windshield while he is driving to kill a zombie on the hood of his truck. I’m no expert but that sounds like a really bad idea. He also plows over zombies at an alarming rate while driving fast – again, no expert but I’m pretty sure that would cause some damage to the vehicle and possibly even get body parts stuck in the wheels & under carriage of the truck. I got to chapter 6, so I can’t honestly review the entire story but up to that point the writing was boring and uninteresting. It might get better as you read on. I might try it again at some future point, but with so many books to read I’m not likely to force myself to plow through this one.

The Day After The Fourth Book 1 Volume 1 Kevin Wimer 9781493784806 Books Reviews

This book starts off with a story-line about a retired Marine who just wants to spend time with his family. Instead, he awakes after a night of drinking to hordes of zombies attacking him and the small town around him. This book is action packed and I didn't even put the book down until after Chapter 6. The action is throughout the whole book and there are unexpected twists and turns along the way that kept me reading and I enjoyed that it wasn't the same type of zombie break out as most others books of the genre.

I enjoyed that the zombies could fight back and it kept not only the main character and the band of brothers that join in along the way trying to think at least one or two steps ahead of the zombies, as it did me as the reader. Can't wait for the next Volume to see how John and the rest of his brothers get the vaccine & save the President! Great read Kevin Wimer!
I read a ton of books, especially zombie ones. The sample I read for this was pretty interesting so I purchased the whole book and was very disappointed. In the beginning of the book the main characters ex-wife has no love for him yet calls him to come rescue her and their children. Along the way he helps rescue people and promises them he will not let them die yet almost all do. He drinks like a fish yet can still run with little or no rest and almost every shot he takes is a head shot. I loved the part where he runs with all his gear, a propane tank strapped to his back and also carries another tank. I've read zombie books where they retain some memories and the ability to perform some tasks but in this book it seems they can drive tanks, trucks, shoot guns and do military maneuvers and even against those odds he somehow is a one man army who's only injury is getting stuck with a small piece of glass. I've always finished any book I've started, regardless how bad it was but I couldn't even finish this one. Just to many things wrong with this book to even continue the review. If you want good zombie books I would recommend The Day by Day series by J.L. Bourne, Surviving the Dead series by James Cook, Sovereign Spirit Saga by David Forsyth, The Arisen Series, Necrophobia Series by Jack Hamlyn or the LZR series books by Bryan James. Much better reads.
I loved this book. Totally nonstop action from very near start to finish. I will wait patiently for the sequel. Don't want to give anything away except that this is a must, must read.
If you're in any way similar to me, you lose interest in a bound stack of papers with writing quicker than watching paint dry. Albeit this book is written in a style unlike traditional novels, it is an easy and enjoyable read. Beginning around the 5th page, I was hooked. Without giving away any content, or ruining your experience with spoilers, trust my word and grab this title... you won't regret it! I commend the author on his great work and hope to read some of his future books when released!
I love books that grab me from page one. Never heard of this author before but this was a really good book. if you love the walking dead you will enjoy this. only the end was a little disappointing do hope there is one to follow.
This book started out good but then it completely lost its way. The characters felt unrealistic and the story line did not flow well. The whole thing was one big stagnant mess. I would not recommend this one unless you have absolutely nothing better to read
I really wanted to like this book but I didn't. I usually enjoy zombie tales that involve former military but those are often written by men and women who have served. I do not believe the author has been in the service nor has he been around many Marines. First and foremost - the main character is a FORMER Marine, not an EX-Marine unless he got a DD. The writing could use the work of a good editor or proofreader. The story wanders too much. The man is going to save his family who call him on his cell phone ALL DAY but stops off at every other corner to pick up supplies. We are told this Marine is Recon but stealth and tactics don't seem to be present. Case in point - that cell phone keeps ringing but he never once thinks to set it to vibrate only. I could go on, but I think you get the picture.
