This is a wonderful book, full of surprising little nuggets of humor and sophistication. Jane Sevier's characters grab you and take you on a journey you don't expect. About the time you start to think heroine Nell Marchand is a too flighty, she proves you and everybody else wrong. About the time you think this is just a fluffy story about a society woman who comes up with a scheme to make money, a brilliant whodunit takes over the plot. And Nell's hero Joseph is understated and sneak-up-on-you attractive! I really enjoyed "Fortune's Fool" and, I must say, the ending made me pray there's a sequel coming pretty darn soon! It's a great weekend read, or a book to curl up with in front of the fire.

This book is waiting to be a movie. The characters are so entertaining (although I confused a few for a while) and the Southern charm is thick and solid--like cold butter. And lo and behold, the mystery ends with an unsolved twist. Does that mean there's a sequel? I think so.
Jane Sevier's voice is hypnotic and addictive. Pitch perfect Southern style at its best! You will feel like you're sitting in a rocking chair on a wide front porch, with your glass of sweet iced tea at your elbow. Her characters are charming and true to life, with witty flashes of insight sparking throughout. The plot is suspenseful and deftly crafted, but honestly, you won't care. You will just want more of Sevier's delicious, honeysuckle voice. Keep these stories coming, pretty please with a cherry on top!
Sad to say, all I knew about Memphis before reading this book was Elvis and BBQ. But Jane Sevier introduced me to a vibrant Memphis in the 1930s with her lyrical, witty style and kept me up late with the mystery--not to mention the budding romance between Nell and Joseph. It's been a while since I've read such a charming, equal relationship, and I can't wait for the next book in the series!
I loved this book. I loved getting into the time frame in the southern states. The dialogue drew me into each character and I saw the book like a movie in my head. Well done, Ms. Sevier!
This is one of the best books I've read this year, and I read a lot of books. Jane Sevier is a gifted writer whose lovely southern voice draws the reader into the Memphis of the thirties with an amazing cast of characters who come alive on the pages of this suspenseful tale. Gutsy heroine Nell reminds me of a reincarnated Scarlett O'Hara--but without the shallow self-centeredness. I adored her! I can't wait for another adventure as Nell learns to use her "visions." Don't miss this one! (And don't be put off by the time period--trust me, it's fabulous.)
I can't tell you how much I enjoyed this book. I simply couldn't put it down. The detailed decscription of the Depression era characters, language, jargon so popular at the time, all blended together to put me right there in the book with the characters. It was like listening to my mother and brother talking and carrying on.

I felt the book was an incredible example of a Southern Author writing at her best. I will not only give this book a five-star rating, but a five star re-read rating as well. You can bet I will be reading it again and again.

I really enjoyed this novel. It was a fun and unpredictable read. The magical backdrop - Memphis in the 1930s -- is well researched, and the writer's Southern sensibility shines through with every clever turn of phrase. The unique storyline twists and turns and keeps you guessing until the end, leaving you wanting more from these delightful characters. Good thing there is a book two!
