Bartimaeus is such an amusing character that it's hard not to like these books. He's vain, witty, irreverent, occasionally brave (usually when the only alternative is certain death), and shows more humanity than most of the humans in these stories.

This book lacks the complexity of the earlier books, particularly the first. For example, Asmira is a somewhat paler, less-developed version of Nathaniel, and while both are forced to re-examine their core beliefs, Asmira is much more black-and-white. Nathaniel's ambition and doubts, by contrast, make him a deeper and more satisfying character. Similarly, the antagonists here are simpler - an evil magician - compared to the deeply corrupt society in the first book.

But Bartamaeus' humor and antics carry the day.

One note about the Kindle edition: part of the joy of these books are the footnotes. With the Kindle, these are accessible via links, but these require more navigation. They're well worth reading, but ebook mechanics make this less convenient than print.

The Ring of Solomon A Bartimaeus Novel Jonathan Stroud Simon Jones 9780307738615 Books Reviews

This is a kind of prequel in the series but something I really looked forward to. The other books in the series carried me along on a fantastic journey through an alternate universe that I have re-read and listened to, even the audiobooks which are excellent. The main character is a Djinn who is sarcastic and aghast at the stupidity and sometimes wonder that is mankind.
I have read every book in Stroud's Bartimaeus Trilogy at least twice. The first time I read his books was in either seventh or eighth grade, and, even as a college freshman, I could not help but read them again. Despite having aged by several years, I still find the series incredibly refreshing and, quite honestly, brilliant. Bartimaeus's sarcasm closely follows my own, and his unending stream of witty banter contained both in-text and within highly anticipated footnotes has made me laugh out loud consistently, causing both my family members and roommate to glare with undisguised annoyance. The plot had enough twists and turns to keep me guessing, and I always enjoyed delving more into Bartimaeus's magical world, similar to the same feelings I held for the Harry Potter Series. As you might expect, I was both excited and nervous to come across this latest novel by Mr. Stroud.

Upon closing THE RING OF SOLOMON less than an hour ago, I can safely say that potential buyers should hold no fear when considering purchasing this book. Stroud has lost none of his creativity, and the new setting of Jerusalem holds just as much adventure as the spirit-riddled streets of London in his previous works. Bartimaeus appears more frequently here, for he and the girl Asmira are the only two narrators.

I agree with a previous reviewer in that THE RING OF SOLOMON appears to be more YA. For those parents concerned with language, violence, etc., I will say that the violence was minimal. With Bartimaeus's hilarious narrating, I always imagine the battle scenes as being cartoonish. That is, the fight scenes are definitely not gory and usually make me laugh harder than the scenes in between. Bartimaeus does use the word "damn" several times in the story, and "bloody" as well, if you must know. However, all of these instances are mild.

Overall, this book is absolutely worthy of the Bartimaeus Trilogy, and though it stands alone, I highly recommend reading the series first. I enjoyed every moment of being thrust back into the sarcastic djinni's world, and used reading time to motivate myself to study (think of a little child being rewarded with candy for saying her ABC's). This book should be read by any avid young reader. I desperately hope I hear the voice of Bartimaeus sometime soon!

Happy reading!

5/5 stars
I found the first book of the Bartimaeus Trilogy to be the most entertaining. Why? Because it had lots of Bartimaeus and thus plenty of Bartimaeus' wit in it. The story was excellent, too. Probably because the main character was Bartimaeus. Imagine my distress (and, ultimately, boredom) when the next book had almost no appearances by Bartimaeus and the third book was a sad attempt at a compromise between the real main character and the kid.

Luckily, Stroud seems to have realized that the best part of the trilogy was Bartimaeus himself and took steps to correct the mistake of the Trilogy by writing a book that features Bartimaeus prominently. Wit, wisdom, action and entertainment ensue. I only hope that Stroud will continue to give us books pushing him into the lead role. This character really does bring out the best in the author.

Thank you, Jonathan Stroud!
Demon Days is the second studio album by British virtual band Gorillaz, released on 11 May 2005 in Japan and on 23 May internationally by Parlophone Records and in the United States by Virgin Records. The album features contributions from De La Soul, Neneh Cherry, Martina Topley-Bird, Roots Manuva, MF Doom, Ike Turner, Bootie Brown of the Pharcyde, Shaun Ryder, Dennis Hopper, the London Community Gospel Choir, and a children's choir. Frontman Damon Albarn brought in Danger Mouse as producer.
Well written and fun with a little historical fiction with a twist. We werent ready for the original series to end. this is more of a prequel so if you are hoping for the story to progress on after London it does not. This goes back to Bartimaus' time during Solomon's reign. These stories involve sort of another dimension where demons/ spirits live. there are issues of enslavment, free will, sort of racism/ descrimination. Good conversations with my 11 year old but decent amount of death and violence so if you don't want that...dont read this book. Iys not the main bulk of the story but its there
